Find your starting point
Gangwon brings together very different outdoor trips. Chuncheon suits a lakeside outing, Gangneung offers coastal wandering, and Sokcho is a base for a mountain-and-sea break.
Choose Chuncheon for lakes, Gangneung for coffee and coast, or Sokcho for Seoraksan access.

Where to go in Gangwon

Chuncheon 춘천
Lakes and forested hills set the pace in Chuncheon. Build a day around the Soyang waterfront or Nami Island, and leave room for the city’s dakgalbi and buckwheat noodles.

Gangneung 강릉
Gangneung is an east-coast escape for beach walks, pine trees and coffee stops. Gyeongpo and Anmok offer different coastal moods; check onward transport before combining the shore with inland sights.

Sokcho 속초
Sokcho pairs a working coastal city with access to Seoraksan National Park. Alternate a mountain day with the beach or market, and keep outdoor plans flexible when the weather changes.

Which Gangwon base fits your trip?
Gangwon is not a single stop. Its lake city, east-coast cafés and mountain gateway reward different itineraries. Choose one base for a short visit; use a second only when you have time for the intercity transfer. These are planning suggestions, not a claim that every attraction can be reached in one day.
| Base | Good first plan | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Chuncheon | Keep the lakeside and a dakgalbi meal together; add a second sight only after checking its route. | Nami Island and the city centre are separate stops, so check the actual transfer before treating them as one walk. |
| Gangneung | Pair Anmok Beach and its Coffee Street, then choose a different day or transport leg for Gyeongpo. | “Gangneung” on a map covers more than one beach area; save the exact entrance you want. |
| Sokcho | Give Seoraksan its own flexible block of time, then use the city market or shore as an easier second outing. | Mountain access, trails and cable-car operation depend on conditions; check notices before travelling. |
A practical order for a short visit
- Pick your anchor: lake, beach-and-coffee, or mountain. Open the matching city guide above before choosing accommodation.
- Check the last connection: compare the current outbound and return transport in your route app and with the operator. Do not plan a late return from a trail or distant beach by guesswork.
- Leave a weather alternative: coastal wind and mountain conditions can make a tightly packed outdoor schedule fragile. A market, museum or café district is a useful backup.
