Seogwipo

Waterfalls and a gentler southern rhythm

Photo: Cheonjiyeon Waterfall, Seogwipo by Abasaa — Public domain. Resized; display crop varies by layout.

Seogwipo anchors the island’s southern coast, with waterfalls, seaside scenery and walking routes. Jeongbang is a signature stop; allow time for stairs and uneven surfaces, and adapt coastal plans to local conditions.

Don’t miss

01 / WATERFALL

Jeongbang Falls

Choose Jeongbang (정방폭포) if you want the dramatic waterfall by the sea. Check the current access notice, and allow for stairs and wet or uneven ground near the viewpoint.

02 / WALK

Cheonjiyeon and the port

Cheonjiyeon (천지연폭포) belongs to a different walking route from Jeongbang. Pair its park area with the port or Saeyeongyo Bridge if time and weather permit; do not assume the two waterfalls share one entrance.

03 / TOWN

Lee Jung-seop Street and Olle Market

Keep the art street and Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market (서귀포매일올레시장) for a relaxed town-centre block. This is a useful alternative when the coast is windy or a trail closes.

What this means for your visit

Use waterproof footwear suitable for your route and follow closures near waterfalls or coastal paths. Mountain conditions require a separate forecast.

Annual averages do not tell you the temperature on a particular day. Consult the KMA forecast and warnings for your destination before travel.

Choose one Seogwipo walking cluster

Seogwipo City and the wider Seogwipo municipality are not the same size of outing. Before booking a room, check whether its map pin is near the old downtown, the Jungmun resort area or a rural coast. A “Seogwipo” address alone does not mean you can walk to the waterfalls.

Short outingHow to build itWhat to check
Old downtownLee Jung-seop Street → Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market → a meal nearby. This keeps shops and food in one part of town.Save the exact market entrance; individual stalls may have different hours.
Waterfall and portChoose Cheonjiyeon and a port-side walk, or Jeongbang and the nearby coast, according to your mobility and the weather.Check each waterfall’s own entrance, opening notice and the walking surfaces. Do not treat “waterfalls” as one stop.
Car-free arrivalFind your airport-to-Seogwipo bus first, then route from its stop to your lodging. Some airport services end at different Seogwipo stops; confirm the live route and last departure.

When to slow down

VisitJeju describes Hayoung Olle as several distinct downtown walking courses, including one that reaches Cheonjiyeon and another through Lee Jung-seop Street and the market. Pick part of one route rather than assuming every named stop fits into an easy stroll. On a wet or windy day, keep the market and the art street while postponing exposed paths.
