Royal palaces, neighborhood cafes and riverside walks make the capital a rewarding first stop. Pair a historic district with a modern neighborhood instead of crossing the whole city in one day.
Don’t miss
Gyeongbokgung
Begin with royal architecture, then leave room for a neighborhood walk instead of rushing between palaces.
Explore Seoul’s must-visit areas
Go beyond one cafe district: choose Namsan for city views, Hongdae for lively streets, Itaewon for an international dining scene, or Seongsu for shops and creative spaces. Give each area time rather than trying to cross all four off in one afternoon.
Han River
Finish with an unhurried riverside walk. Check the weather before making an outdoor evening your only plan.

A palace-and-neighborhood half day
For a first visit, keep the day north of the river: Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁) → a meal in the nearby Jongno area → Insadong (인사동) → Jonggak Station (종각역) for the return. This is a suggested route, not a personally tested tour. Budget roughly four to five hours including your palace visit and meal; this is a planning allowance, not measured travel time.

| Stop | What to do | Time to reserve |
|---|---|---|
| Gyeongbokgung | Use the palace entrance as your destination, not an arbitrary point inside its grounds. Choose the main palace visit before adding museums. | About 90–120 minutes |
| Meal break | Eat near your palace exit before heading toward Insadong; avoid crossing Seoul just for lunch. | About 45–60 minutes |
| Insadong | Browse the main street and select a teahouse or craft shop. Finish near Jonggak or return toward Anguk depending on your accommodation. | About 60–90 minutes |
Allow additional time between stops. Check your chosen day with the official palace walking-tour information and the palace operator before booking. A guided-tour reservation and palace admission are separate questions. If the palace is closed or the weather is poor, shorten the outdoor plan instead of adding a distant neighborhood.
Choose a separate day for the other side of Seoul
Hongdae works better as a west-Seoul outing; Seongsu and Gangnam fit an east/south-focused day. Do not add all three after the palace. The time lost to station transfers, walking to exits and queues matters as much as the train ride.
Build a longer Seoul stay
For a short first visit, use the three-day Seoul itinerary to put the palace area, Namsan and one other neighborhood on separate days. Before booking a room, compare Myeongdong, Hongdae and Gangnam against the places you actually plan to visit. A convenient base saves more time than squeezing an extra district into every day.

| Area | What to focus on | Planning tip |
|---|---|---|
| Namsan | Viewpoints, green paths and the tower area | Check the route uphill and the weather. Tower admission and outdoor access are different things. |
| Hongdae | Shopping, music-oriented streets and casual meals | Save a specific meeting point and check your return journey before staying late. |
| Itaewon | International restaurants and neighborhood exploring | Choose a few nearby stops; some side streets involve slopes. |
| Seongsu | Design shops, cafes and changing pop-up spaces | Check individual opening days and reservation rules; temporary events are not permanent attractions. |

What this means for your visit
For Namsan viewpoints, carry an extra layer and check wind as well as temperature. Keep an indoor alternative for a wet sightseeing day.
For this palace route, summer exposure is concentrated in the courtyards, while winter ice can affect outdoor walking. Choose shorter outdoor sections when conditions require it. Namsan is a separate uphill outing and needs its own weather and access check.
Annual averages do not tell you the temperature on a particular day. Consult the KMA forecast and warnings for your destination before travel.
