Where should you stay in Seoul: Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam or Dongdaemun? Start with Myeongdong for a first trip centered on historic and central Seoul; consider Hongdae for a west-Seoul base with lively evenings; choose Gangnam when most plans are south of the Han River; or compare Dongdaemun for an east-central base focused on shopping and nearby city walks. These are areas, not individual hotel recommendations. Before booking, check the exact entrance, airport journey and two sightseeing routes in a live map; room prices, noise and convenience vary street by street.
Author perspective: I have lived in Seoul for 30 years. The comparison below is based on neighborhood geography and practical transit routes, not on a claim that I stayed in every area’s hotels. Before choosing a room, I would compare the real walk from its nearest subway exit and the route home after an evening out; a neighborhood label alone cannot tell you either of those things.
The quick comparison
These are editorial planning judgments, not a ranking of every hotel. Put your saved sightseeing pins on one map before comparing room rates. A cheaper room can be poor value if it adds repeated transfers or an inconvenient walk with bags.
| Area | A good starting point for | Main trade-off | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Myeongdong | First-time sightseeing in central Seoul | Busy shopping streets and variable evening noise | Exact entrance and walking route from your station |
| Hongdae | A west-Seoul base with lively evenings | Rooms near entertainment streets may be noisy | Distance from Hongik University Station and late-night activity |
| Gangnam | An itinerary concentrated south of the river | Repeated trips to historic northern sights add travel | Which part of Gangnam, and the nearest useful rail line |
| Dongdaemun | Shopping-led plans and an east-central Seoul base | Properties marketed under this name can sit near different stations | Exact station, exit, evening walking route and journeys to your saved sights |
Myeongdong: a practical central starting point
Choose Myeongdong when much of your sightseeing is in central Seoul and you want easy access to food and shopping in the evening. Do not assume a property described as being in Myeongdong sits beside Myeongdong Station. Some addresses may be more convenient from another nearby station.
Compare the walking route to the actual building, including crossings and slopes. For a quiet room, read recent reviews about street noise, lifts and soundproofing rather than relying only on the neighborhood name.
Hongdae: plan around your evenings
Hongdae is worth considering when you enjoy a lively neighborhood and want to spend time in western Seoul. A station-area hotel and a quieter residential-side guesthouse can feel very different. Airport rail convenience should be checked against your terminal, service and exact walking route, not treated as a promise of a door-to-door trip.
If you are a light sleeper, inspect the streets immediately around the property and look for recent reviews mentioning music or late-night crowds.
Gangnam: useful when your plans are south of the river
Gangnam is a large area, not one small hotel district. A hotel near Gangnam Station, one near a different rail interchange and one marketed for the wider business district may support very different daily routes. It is a sensible candidate if most of your appointments, shopping or sightseeing are south of the Han River.
If you expect to return repeatedly to palace districts, compare those journeys before committing. A modern-looking building does not remove the need to check room size, laundry access and the final walk from transit.
Dongdaemun: check the station before choosing a hotel
“Dongdaemun” on a hotel listing can describe a broad area. Dongdaemun Station, Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station and Dongmyo Station are separate places; a hotel near one should not be assumed to be next to another. Use the actual address in NAVER Map and check the final walk from the nearest useful exit, especially if you will return with shopping bags or luggage.
Hongdae or Dongdaemun? Hongdae is a stronger candidate when your saved plans and evenings are in western Seoul. Dongdaemun can fit a shopping-led itinerary in the east-central part of the city. Neither is automatically better for every traveler: compare your airport arrival and two planned sightseeing journeys from the exact hotel address before paying.
A better hotel checklist
Do not switch hotels simply to sample several neighborhoods on a short stay. Packing, checking out, storing luggage and waiting for the next room can consume useful sightseeing time. Choose one base unless the move solves a specific problem.
- Save the exact address in NAVER Map and compare one airport journey plus two typical sightseeing journeys.
- Check whether your room has its own bathroom, a lift to the relevant floor and space to open your luggage.
- Read the cancellation deadline and whether the displayed total includes the charges relevant to your booking.
- For a late arrival, confirm the check-in procedure directly with the property.
- Check recent noise reviews and the street outside the room, not only the lobby photographs.

Frequently asked questions
Which area should a first-time visitor choose?
Start by comparing Myeongdong and Hongdae against your itinerary. Add Dongdaemun when shopping and east-central stops dominate, or Gangnam when most plans are south of the river. There is no universal winner: compare exact hotel addresses and travel routes.
Is one area always cheaper?
No. Dates, room type, cancellation terms and individual properties matter more than a blanket neighborhood claim. Compare total prices for the same dates.
Should I book next to any subway station?
A useful line and manageable route matter more than the station symbol alone. Check transfers, last services and the walk to the accommodation.
