A Nami Island day trip has four separate decisions: which Seoul station to leave from, which train reaches Gapyeong, how to get from Gapyeong Station to the ferry dock, and when to head back. Booking only the outward train is the common planning gap. Use this guide to build a route you can reverse comfortably; check live schedules and admission prices before paying.
My spring visit: driving to the ferry
In spring 2026, I drove from Seoul, parked at the Nami Island ferry dock and crossed by boat. From the approach, I found myself wondering whether there really was an island tucked away there. Once across, it felt much larger than I expected: there were different walking paths, places to eat and things to browse. Squirrels darted around during my visit, and I remember the tall trees and the smell of the woods. I stopped at a souvenir shop and bought a bottle of alcohol to take home. That mix of forest walk and small discoveries is why I would like to return in another season. I have visited in spring only; the train route below is a planning guide, not a route I personally took. I have not included a parking fee, ferry wait or travel time because I cannot verify those figures from this trip.

The route at a glance
| Leg | What to look for | Check before travel |
|---|---|---|
| Seoul → Gapyeong Station | Gyeongchun Line local service or ITX-Cheongchun, depending on your starting station and budget. | Departure station, exact train, ticket type and return time. |
| Gapyeong Station → ferry dock | Walk or take a local taxi to the Nami Island boarding point. | VISITKOREA describes about 30 minutes on foot or about 5 minutes by taxi; traffic and pace vary. |
| Dock → island | Buy the current island admission/boarding option and take the ferry. | Last return ferry and any weather disruption. |
VISITKOREA identifies Sangbong for a Gyeongchun Line route and Yongsan or Cheongnyangni for ITX-Cheongchun services to Gapyeong. These are options, not a promise that every train from those stations stops where you need. Check the train number and destination on the day. “Nami Island” in a navigation app may point to the island rather than the road-accessible Nami Island ferry dock (남이섬 선착장); save both.

Local train or ITX?
The local Gyeongchun Line is the flexible option when you prefer to pay as you go and do not mind more stops. ITX-Cheongchun is an intercity rail service with a separate ticket and a reserved-train mindset: choose a departure that fits your day, and leave enough transfer time at the station. Compare the full journey from your hotel, not just the time printed for one train segment. A supposedly faster train can lose its advantage if reaching its Seoul departure station takes much longer.
For a family or a group with limited walking capacity, a direct shuttle or booked tour may simplify transfers, but check exactly whether the price includes admission, ferry travel, other attractions and the return trip. Do not assume “Nami transfer included” means every cost is covered.
A day-trip sequence that leaves room to breathe
- Choose your return train before departure and save a backup later option.
- At Gapyeong, confirm the route to the ferry dock, not only to the island pin. A taxi may save walking, especially in heat or rain; verify the metered fare and destination before riding.
- At the dock, read the current admission and ferry board. The island operator notes that schedules can vary seasonally or with conditions.
- On the island, choose a loop: one tree-lined avenue, a riverside stretch and an unhurried meal or indoor break. Keep a buffer for the return ferry and station transfer.
Autumn weekends may bring queues. In winter, wind by the water can make the ferry wait feel colder than the forecast for Seoul. Neither a weather app nor an old travel blog guarantees today’s sailing. When the forecast is poor, consider an indoor Seoul day instead.
What people often get wrong
First, they search for a bus to “Nami Island” and forget the final boat crossing. Second, they confuse Gapyeong Station with Gapyeong Bus Terminal. Third, they quote an old admission price; a 2024 tourism article explicitly warns its details may differ now. Check the island’s current admission page rather than using a fixed figure from this guide. Finally, if you add another Gapyeong attraction, recalculate travel and closing times instead of assuming everything nearby fits in one afternoon.
For the Seoul side of the trip, use our Naver Map guide and Seoul guide. If this is your first rail journey in Korea, keep the station names written in Korean as well as English.
